Introduction to Composites in Construction

This information is suitable for those with little prior knowledge wanting to find out about composites in construction.

Composite words explained

Introduction to Composites - brief introduction to what a composite is

Manufacturing Technique - Very brief overview of techniques and what components they would be used to produce: hand lay, spray deposition, RTM/VARI/similar, RIFT, continuous lamination, filament winding, pultrusion, LP press, HP press, vacuum bagging, autoclave/prepregging, injection moulding, film stacking

Engineering Properties of FRP Composites - This includes a review of the engineering properties of typical fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites and general characteristics of the more common matrix materials and reinforcing fibres. Mechanical and physical properties are presented both for raw fibres and typical laminates reinforced with such fibres and these are compared to conventional materials used within the construction industry such as steel and concrete

Design with FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) - The design process for composite materials is described and detailed in order to demonstrate the similarities and differences with other materials. Examples are drawn specifically for glass fibre composites but the principles apply equally to the other composite material options.
